The Island of Losinj is located in south-western part of the Kvarner’s islands inside the Kvarner Bay. It is part of the Cres-Losinj island group that in ancient times was know under a common name of Apsyrtides.

Image-losinj prolazIn the past the island of Cres and Losinj where one, only after the channel of Osor was excavated ( during the Roman period), two islands emerged but today the bridge connects the islands.

The archipelago of Losinj comprises the Island of Losinj that is the biggest island of the archipelago and also a few smaller islands: Unije, Ilovik, Susak, Vele Srakane, and a few smaller uninhabited islands.

The islands of this archipelago make a form of natural bridge between Istria and Dalmatia and it is interesting because of position right in the middle between the Equator and the North Pole, where the 45th parallel passes through the north side of the island of Cres and the biggest part of the island is in the subtropical zone of the southern half of the northern part of the Earth.


 

The Island of Lošinj History and Culture

This island is a historical fishing village that people started to colonize in 13th century. In the past it was popular for building the sailing vessels and its inhabitants were one of the best sailors on the Mediterranean. The settlements Big and Small Vaillage were built trough the 14th and 15th century. Big Village was today's Veli Lošinj. Its core was built around the church of St. Nikola. In 15th century the village exstands to the bay of Lošinj and it was in the amphitheater shape and Baroque style. It had a square and two main streets that led to other villages. Mali Lošinj was also at the biggining a fishing village. Soon people realised that Mediterranean climate and vegetation surounded with the clean sea help and cure people with health problems. In 19th century the tourism started to develope and that is why Lošinj is one of the famous touristic destinations

There is a lot of cultural manifestations and festivals on the island. The inhabitants share proudly with tourists their history and culture. Here you can find fishing evenings and games and entertaining programmes in the bay of St. Martin.

The Island of Lošinj Museums

The museum in Mali Lošinj is a public institute opened within the Folk Open Academy and it keeps collections: art, cultural-historical, archeological, numismatic, ethnographic, the collection of copies, breadbords and moulds, technical and archive collection. The museum in Veli Lošinj is placed in an old castle.

The Island of Lošinj Nightlife

This island is a real heaven on the Earth so getting here for having crazy late-night fun may dissapoint you. There are few bars, disco clubs and coffee bars where you can go out but if you want something more you can go to the island of Cres of any other nearby town.

You can get to the Lošinj by getting to the ferry Valbiska (the Island of Krk) - Merag (the Island of Cres) or Brestova (Istria) - Porozina (the Island of Cres) and then by personal vehicle or by organized bus to Lošinj.
